In Bunnings a few days ago and remember needing blue tack. I observe an older staff member in one of the trade aisles sorting hammers, and ask him where I can find some.

‘We don't sell blue tack,’ he says, paused over his collection of hammers. ‘We sell white tack.’

‘Oh,’ I say. ‘It's not the same is it?’

‘Nooo’, he shakes his head emphatically, lifting a hammer. ‘It's shit!’

‘It is shit isn't it!’

‘It's shit.’ he echoes, smiling. He twirls his hammer. ‘Everyone here knows it's shit.’

‘Yeah,’ I say. ‘I used white tack on my fridge at home and everything falls off all the time.’

‘I don't know why we sell it,’ he plants the hammer on the shelf and turns to me. ‘Go to Coles and ask for blue tack.’

I thank him for his candid response and leave Bunnings a little wiser and without my tack.
